A Storied Past: Balangir’s Role in the Independence Movement The importance of Balangir lies in the fact that some key events in India’s independence struggle originally started from this place. A Naga Sadhu hailing from Cuttack, Mounibaba, presented a bamboo stick to Mahatma Gandhi during the independence struggle in Bombay (now Mumbai).
