The name Satkosia is derived from two words: sat, meaning seven, and kosk, meaning two miles, indicating the gorge’s length of 14 miles or 22 kilometers.

Satkosia Tiger Reserve was established in 2007 and includes two adjoining wildlife sanctuaries: the Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary and the Baisipalli Sanctuary. The reserve is spread across four districts: Angul, Cuttack, Nayagarh, and Boudh. The reserve covers 964 square kilometers, with 524 square kilometers designated as the core area. This area is also part of the Mahanadi Elephant Reserve. Satkosia is the meeting point of two bio-geographic regions of India: the Deccan Peninsula and the Eastern Ghats, which contribute enormous biodiversity.

Satkosia Gorge is a well-known gorge in Odisha’s Angul District. This refers to a seven-mile stretch of the Mahanadi River in Odisha’s Ahgul district. The Badmul Sand Resort is located in the southern part of Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary.

There is also an eco-camp, which has ten luxurious cotton tents. Here you can also see local folk dance.
