Odia Calendar Aswina (SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER) 2025
The month of Aswina falls in between September and October. It is considered to be an auspicious month for many reasons.
Durga Puja is conducted for a duration of 9 days within the month of Aswina and concludes with Dussehra. From the first day to the ninth day of Shukla Paksha of Aswina, Durga Puja is celebrated in honor of the Goddess Durga, who personifies feminine power or Shakti, with devotion being payed to nine forms of Durga during these nine days.
Dussehra falls on the tenth day of Aswina and is the day that marks the victory of good over evil; Goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo-headed demon Mahishaura, who disturbed peace and threatened destruction of the whole Universe. Therefore, she is called Mahisha-Mardini, meaning the one who eliminated Mahishasura. In different parts of India, Dussehra is called Vijayadashami, which signifies the victory of the God Rama over the demon-king Ravana. On this day, Lord Rama killed Demon Ravana and freed his wife Sita from Lanka.
Gajalaxmi Puja is held on the full moon day after Sharad Purnama in Aswina month. This autumn festival is connected with the birthday of Goddess Laxmi, Goddess of wealth. The festival is significant to unmarried girls and boys. Gajalaxmi Puja is also known as Kumar Purnima in Odisha.
