Odia Calendar Pousha (DECEMBER-JANUARY) 2025
The month of Pousha occurs in the Hindu calendar from December to January. The festival of Dhanu Sankranti marks the turning of the sun into the constellation Sagittarius or the Dhanu Rashi. This corresponds to the beginning of Pousha in the Odia calendar.
On this day, devotees bathe in the sacred rivers and worship the Sun God. The temples of the Sun God are also special places of worship on this day. The month of Pousha is considered to be the season of abundance in Odisha. So upon the harvest, a feast of celebration is held.
Special dishes of sweetened rice flakes called ‘Dhanu Muan’ are cooked and offered to Lord Jagannath and the Sun God. During this month, at Jagannath Temple in Puri, Pahili Bhoga is dedicated to the sibling deities from Dhanu Sankranti.
This offering would last a month until Makar Sankranti. Goddess Mahalaxmi has returned to her parental house for a month from this day. For this reason in Jagannath temple, kitchen food is prepared by the mother of Lord Jagannath (Yoshoda) and is offered to Lord Jagannath early in the morning.
This Prasad is known as Pahili Bhoga, which is offered to Lord Jagannath every day during this month. We provide the Odia calendar for December and January, showing the time of the sun rising and the sun setting, dates of Purima and Amavasya, as well as all the important marriage dates, thread ceremonies, and other festival dates.
