Odia Calendar Jyestha (MAY-JUNE) 2025

Jyestha occupies the Llophhs or the Bell in the Middle periods from May and June. It is an important month for the people of Odisha for various reasons.

The sacred bathing festival of Lord Jagannath is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Jyestha. It is also known to be Snana Purnima or Deva Snana Purnima. The Holy Trinity of Jagannath Temple comes out of the main temple to the Snana Mandapa (bathing platform) to receive the grandest and holiest bath to beat the heat of the Sun.

The Savitri Brata is celebrated on Jyestha Amavasya tithi, therefore, it is also known as Savitri Amavasya. This is in memory of the holy act of Savitri who rescued her husband, Satyavan, from Yama, the God of death. On this day, married Hindu women fast in order that they may have long and healthy lives for their husbands.

Sitala Sasthi is celebrated on the sixth of the Jyestha month during the Shukla Paksha. This festival is celebrated as the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is one of the major festivals for the Odia Brahmins. People observing this festival believe, for the sake of virtue, that Shiva represents the scorching heat of summer while Goddess Parvati represents the first rain. Sital Sasthi is a celebration wherein Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are adopted by two families, and their wedding is celebrated with the involvement of rituals. After the marriage, the God and Goddess are then carried around the city and village via a procession.
