Odia Calendar Sravana (JULY-AUGUST) 2025

Sravana is an important month in the Hindu calendar which usually falls between July and August. In Hinduism, Sravana is regarded as the holy month of the year when several religious rites are observed.

The worship of Lord Shiva is particularly significant in Sravana month. In this month, it is said that he drank the poison that emerged during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) to save the whole world. Special prayers and rituals are performed by followers of Lord Shiva in this month to seek His blessings. Fasting (particularly on Mondays) is most popular among Hindus during Sravana.

Janmashtami or Ashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Sravana month, which commemorates the Janma (birth) of Lord Krishna. The birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated by the people of Odisha with great zeal and vigour.

Raksha Bandhan, or Rakhi Purnima, is another Hindu religious festival, celebrated on Sravana Purnima – the full moon day of the month Sravana. The festival symbolizes and celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters.

Nag Panchami is also celebrated in many parts of Odisha on the fifth day after Amavasya of the month of Sravana. The snake god Naga is worshiped on this auspicious day. Nag Panchami is finally observed, signifying Krishna’s successful effort to quell the evil Kaliya Naga.

Gamha Purnima is celebrated in the month of Sravana by the people of Odisha. Cows and bullocks are decorated and worshipped by people on this day. The history of Lord Krishna and Radha in Jagannath culture depicts their enjoyment of the Sravana rainy season commencing from Shukla Pakhya Ekadashi and ending along with the cuckoo festival Jhulana Yatra on Rakhi Purnima. The idols of Radha and Krishna are exquisitely decorated on a Jhula, hence the term Jhulana Yatra.
