Odia Calendar Kartika (OCTOBER-NOVEMBER) 2025
One month during which the festival days fall is between October and November. Kartika is held in high regard according to the Hindu calendar, marked by numerous important festivals and rituals.
It is the month that is most looked forward to by the people of Odisha. Kartika Brata is observed throughout the month. Those who perform the Kartika Brata according to Hindu beliefs will need to rise at dawn and breakfast by daybreak and it would be this most sacred month for both Supreme Gods, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.Â
The Kartika Brata will complete on the day of ‘Kartika Purnima’ (full moon day of Kartika) which is the last day of this Kartika month. It is customary for the devotees to take a dip into the holy waters of Pancha Tirtha in Puri on this day and visit the Jagannath Temple to receive Lord Jagannath’s blessings.
The last five days of the month Kartika are highly auspicious and are called ‘Panchuka’. During the five days, a huge number of devotees visit Puri and attend the Jagannath Temple. The three Deities: Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra, and Lord Sudarshana are dressed in five different Veshas (attires) each day during Panchuka.
The festival of lights, Deepawali, is celebrated annually on the Amavasya tithi, the fifteenth day of the Kartika month. This occasion symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Kartika Amavasya is also celebrated as Kali Puja, with immense importance to Odisha and other parts of Eastern India. This festivity is also called Shyama Kali Puja.
Anla Navami, which is the ninth day of Kartika (Kartika Shukla Nabami), is celebrated in Odisha. This day holds great significance at the Sakhigopala Temple near Puri. On this day devotees are given the offering of having the Darshan of the feet of the idol of Goddess Radha in the Sakhigopala Temple.
